About David C. Johnson
David has been painting his entire life. Ask him, and he’ll tell you he completed his first oil painting—a seascape—in second grade!
That passion led David to hone his skills throughout high school and into college, earning him a BFA in painting in 1980 from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. David then began his professional career focusing on large landscapes and figurative subjects. His work has been featured in group and solo shows in Baltimore, San Francisco, Rhode Island, and New York City. Gaining a reputation for small still-lifes and portraiture in New York, David was also recognized for his Vista Landscape scenes capturing broad views of coastal Rhode Island. His portraits and landscapes hang in many private homes and select spaces.
David works primarily in oil on fine linen, and has experience in various mediums including pencil, pastels, and charcoal. He works in both plein air and from detailed sketches. Meeting with clients to ensure he captures likenesses at their most beautiful, David spends time understanding their perspectives and interests before beginning his work. Preliminary charcoal drawings advance ideas and provide clients an early view of the finished pieces.
